Thursday 7th Week of Easter 12th May 2016
’I pray for those who welcome my Word…so that the Love with which you loved me may be in them.’
Ac.22,20,23,6-11 Ps.15 Jn. 17,20-26
“I pray not only for these but also for those who through their teaching will come to believe in me.May they all be one, just as, Father, you are in me and I am in you, so that they may also be in us, so that the world may believe it was you who sent me.I pray not only for these but also for those who through their teaching will come to believe in me.May they all be one, just as, Father, you are in me and I am in you, so that they may also be in us, so that the world may believe it as you who sent me.”
When Jesus speaks about unity, it becomes a hope and a promise, something that is certain . When we think about Christian unity, it seems a long way off, something difficult, improbable to come about in the short term, we view it as people who feel guilty.
Now in fact, the unity towards which we are walking already exists in God. Jesus has often told us; ’I am in the Father, and the Father is in me. The Father and I, we are One.’ And the living link between the Father and the Son is the Holy Spirit. This has always been the case and will always be.
We are enveloped by the Love of Jesus and His Prayer : ’I pray for all those who welcome their word and who will believe in me.’
The cry of Jesus towards his Father is the cry of the Gospel, the Good News, making of us disciples.
’May the Love with which you loved me be in them.’
We are in the prayer of Jesus, prayer in which we become like him. Jesus who became a little child in the Blessed Virgin Mary was a completely free man, a reflection of the Father : the Beloved Son, the Word made Flesh.
’I have given them the glory you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one. With me in them and you in me, may they be so perfect in unity that the world will recognise that it was you who sent me and that you have loved them as you you have loved me.’
This intimacy, this reciprocity of love of the Father and the Son, Jesus offers it to us as a model for our fraternal unity : ’May all be one as you, Father, are in me and I in you.’ But the unity between the Father and the Son is even better than a model it is like space where God welcomes us so as to live in it our own unity. When we seek unity, in some way we come to come to dwell in it together in God’s Love; our love is warmed by the very Warmth of God’s Love. Jesus walked upon our path, rejected by men he became the One in agony, crucified, the Bread of Life allowing us to join Him in our hunger for God.Because He is totally rid of Himself, Jesus Our Saviour manifests the Infinite Love of the Father. he desires this dame Love for us. So that we be completely emptied of ourselves the Holy Spirit may take up all HIs space within us. If we are poor of ourselves, God in His Infinite Love comes to us and takes up His place. So we are Love as He Himself is Love. ’Where I am I want them to be with me also.’ Where the Beloved Son of the Father is, his Bride humanity is there also. He wants the same Love for her, the same Unity of Love as with His Father.
’Father, Upright One, the world has not known you but I have known you, and these have known that you have sent me.I have made your name known to them and will continue to make it known, so that the love with which you loved me may be in them, and so that I may be in them.’
God is the first One to love us, it is He who awaken sin us the source of Love and who continually replenishes it.Since we are loved, we go towards those whom God places before us with hands that never hurt, with words that never close the heart, with a way of looking that always brings hope.
God loves us just as we are, with God we are never too far away because He comes himself to wipe away all distance and to put far off all fear. We can always ’grow’ in love at the school of the poor and little ones. ’The Kingdom of God will be given to those like them.’ It is in becoming an Infant at Christmas that God
chose to reveal Himself so that we no longer be afraid of Him. Who could be frightened of a little child? we ask this unity of Love in God.Jesus wants to work for unity in humanity with us, asking of us this impoverishment so that, nourished by the Bread of the Eucharist, not holding on to anything for ourselves, we may become like Him! May the All powerfulness of the Holy Spirit, through Jesus’ prayer, make us the Body of Christ : ’I desire that where I am, they too may be.’
Let us ask the Holy Spirit for the grace to work at unity in our lives.
